What Is Residential Asbestos Roof Removal?
Residential asbestos roof removal is the safe, legally compliant process of removing asbestos-containing roofing materials from a home including fibro cement flat sheets, Super Six corrugated sheets, and decramastic tiles that may contain asbestos and disposing of them at a licensed waste facility.
New Zealand homes built between the 1940s and 1990 commonly used asbestos in roofing and cladding because the material was cheap, durable, and widely available. In Auckland suburbs like Mt Eden, Grey Lynn, Ponsonby, Remuera, Birkenhead, and Howick, a very high proportion of homes from this era still have original asbestos roofing in place.
As these materials age, Auckland's high humidity and seasonal temperature changes cause them to deteriorate. Cracked, crumbling, or weathered asbestos cement releases microscopic fibres into the air fibres that, when inhaled, can cause mesothelioma, asbestosis, and lung cancer. These diseases have long latency periods, meaning exposure today may not cause symptoms for 20 to 40 years. This is why acting promptly is important.
Under the Health and Safety at Work (Asbestos) Regulations 2016, the removal of asbestos in New Zealand is strictly regulated by WorkSafe New Zealand. Any removal job involving more than 10 square metres of non-friable (Class B) asbestos which covers most residential roofs must be carried out by a Class B licensed removalist. If the asbestos is friable (Class A) loose, crumbled, or powdery only a Class A licensed contractor can legally remove it.
JP Asbestos holds both Class A and Class B licences. Whether your Auckland home has standard fibro cement sheeting in good condition or badly degraded roofing that's become friable with age, we have the right licence, training, and equipment to remove it safely. DIY asbestos removal from a residential roof is strongly discouraged for Class B material and illegal for Class A the risks to your family's health and your legal liability are simply too great.
When JP Asbestos removes an asbestos roof, we use wet suppression methods to prevent fibre release, maintain full containment of the work area, dispose of all waste in double-sealed, clearly labelled asbestos bags at a WorkSafe-approved facility, and provide you with a disposal certificate. If required for your council permit or insurance, we can also issue a clearance air monitoring report.
Did You Know?
Over 20% of New Zealand homes are estimated to contain asbestos in some form. In Auckland's older suburbs many built between the 1950s and 1970s the proportion of homes with asbestos roofing is significantly higher. Asbestos was commonly used in NZ roofing and cladding until the 1980s, and millions of these original installations are still in place today.
